Our House is Your House

Thanks so much for renting the Terraces Unit at Crossett Hill Lodge. Please treat it as your own during your stay. You should feel free to use the grill, fire pit, wood stove (see directions below), and shared laundry. We trust you will leave the house and its contents as you found them. Please do not hesitate to contact us during your stay with any questions or comments. We would love your feedback to help us make future rentals successful. We hope you will come back again!

Arriving at the Terraces Unit

The Terraces Unit is located on the lower level of 746 Crossett Hill Road, Duxbury, Vermont. Check-in any time after 4:00 PM.

Take the southern-most entrance to Crossett Hill Road off Route 100. It’s a horseshoe-shaped road. The north entrance to Crossett Hill takes you several miles around the horseshoe. The south entrance takes you up a steep hill, but is much shorter on the gravel road. Our house is on the right, where you’ll see the crossed skis with 746 nailed to a poplar tree. Drive down the driveway and park in the parking area, leaving room in front of the garage doors.

The Loft Unit (where we live and rent occasionally to other guests) has its own entrance through the garage. The Terraces entrance is on the south side of the house. The visitor code for the keypad is available from the hosts. You’ll proceed down the stairs to the Terraces unit.

In the event that we are at home or there are guests in the Loft unit upstairs, please honor quiet hours in the evening after 10 PM.

Coats, Hats, and Footwear

You may hang coats and hats and boots in lower level of the entryway on the south side. No shoes that were worn outdoors should be worn in the house. You will find black and red slippers in the entryway cubbies for wearing inside the house.

Putting your stuff away

In each room and bathroom you’ll find storage for your personal items. You may store larger items in the lower level of the entryway. You’ll find a refrigerator and cupboard space for your food in the kitchen. In the shared utility room downstairs, you’ll find a dishwasher as well as a shared clothes washer, dryer, and ironing board.

Linens and such

You will find clean linens on the beds and towels on the racks in the bedrooms. Backup sheets may be found under each bed. Additional sheets and towels may be found in the cupboards of the utility room. Extra blankets are in the bunkroom cupboard. Extra toilet paper and paper towels are located in the lower entry way behind the sliding doors.

Wood Stove

Talk to Jim (508 904 0749) before using the wood stove. Here are the directions:

  1. Turn the lever on the left side of the stove to the updraft position, pointing toward the chimney.
  2. Turn the lever on the right side of the stove to the fully open air-supply position, pointing toward the room.
  3. Don’t open the front doors. Load wood through the top griddle.
  4. Set your fuel in the stove: lots of crumpled newspaper at the bottom, then small kindling, then large kindling, then one piece of hardwood.
  5. Open the sliding door to the outside a crack to equalize the air pressure.
  6. Light the fire. Close the top griddle.
  7. Once the fire is going well, add more hardwood a  piece at a time.
  8. Once the temperature gauge has reached 450º F, you may turn the lever on the left side of the stove to the downdraft position, pointing toward the room (away from the fireplace) as shown at left.
  9. To slow down the fire, restrict the air supply by  turning the lever on the right side of the stove to the closed air-supply position, pointing toward the fireplace), as shown at the right.
  10. You’ll find more kindling and hardwood just outside the entry door.

Wall heaters

In extremely cold weather, turn on the auxiliary wall heaters in the bedrooms, living room, and bathrooms. Use the small remote controls to turn the grey bedroom wall heaters on and off. Use the knobs to control the heaters in the living room and bathrooms. Please turn them off when you depart.

Mini-Split Heating and Cooling System

The unit up on the north wall provides basic heating and cooling. Its remote control is above the bookcase on the stairs. Setting it at 68º when it’s cold, and 74º when it’s hot, will keep you comfortable. This system works best with the fan set to point down, and at full speed. Keep the ceiling fan running at medium speed to circulate the air down from the ceiling.

Trash and Recycling

The silver can under the dartboard has a bucket for trash and another for recycling. Extra garbage bags may be found under the sink in the kitchen. If you fill a bag, take it to the bins in the garage. The code for the garage door is 9669. Please close the door after disposing of your waste.

When you Leave

If you’re leaving for several hours and it looks like rain, please close all sliding doors. The awning windows may be left open several inches.

Check-out time is before 11:00 AM. When you’re vacating the unit, please:

  • leave all towels hanging to dry and leave linens on beds for the housekeeper.
  • turn off towel heater in bathroom.
  • close all windows.
  • remove all trash and recycling.
  • remove all food that you brought in.
  • make sure the door is locked and closed completely.
  • turn off all auxiliary wall heaters.
  • turn lights out.

Pets

Unfortunately, we have family members with severe pet allergies so no pets are allowed in the house at any time.

Smoking

Do not smoke inside the house at any time. If you smoke inside, we charge $175 extra for de-fumigating.

Electronics

Wifi

Our wireless access point is called “CHYC” Its WAP password is “wirelesspassword.” It’s connected through the broadband cable.

TV

It’s a vast wasteland. Don’t watch it. Read a book instead. Or take a walk or ski on the logging road that extends from our driveway. If you must watch the television, follow these steps:

1. Use the Samsung remote control to turn the power on to the television.
2. Use the same remote control to change the channels and adjust the volume.

If you know how to use AppleTV, you’ll see that there’s one attached to the television. If you want to use the AppleTV, first turn it on by pressing the Menu button on the silver remote control. Then use the Samsung remote control to set the television to the HDMI input. You will see the AppleTV menu on the television. No password is set on the AppleTV.

Outdoors Shared Spaces

In the event that we are home or that there are visitors upstairs in the Loft, please note that the outdoor spaces are for sharing. Feel free to move furniture and use the small fire pit, the grill, the picnic table, etc.

Visiting Duxbury, Waterbury and Central Vermont

What’s nearby

Do take time to explore our property. In season, feel free to pick and eat the blueberries and raspberries in the front yard. The right-of-way that extends our driveway is free for you to explore – see if you can find the hobbit’s house on the left (look for a no-trespassing sign). In season, there are tons of blackberries ready for the picking along the right-of-way. Please do not venture east of the the right-of-way into our neighbors’ private properties.

Once winter sets in, feel free to borrow snow shoes, cross-country skis, sleds, and the toboggan. We have trails throughout our 12-acre property that you should feel free to explore. Make a snowman to greet the next guests!
